Summer Reading Camps for Students

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” ~ Dr. Seuss

I am one of those teachers that always wished she could have just a little more time with her students before they move out of my class. At the end of the school year, children are primed for learning and ready to build on basic literacy concepts. An intensive exposure to key elements of reading and writing foundations in a playful and collaborative format can have a profound effect on the beginning reader’s skills. As a result, I have developed my summer reading camp, Literacy Ladders, for children moving up to 1st, 2nd and on to 3rd grade.

Literacy Ladders is a Summer Reading Camp that Supports Beginning Readers Grade Level Transition

Word games at summer campLiteracy Ladders is a summer reading camp designed for the graduating kindergartner and rising 2nd grader in need of extra support to promote smooth and non-labored reading and writing at the child’s expected grade level. The curriculum employs research-based techniques addressing the five components of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

The camp provides opportunities for small group word play and instruction, interactive practice, individual choice of activities, guided reading and fluency practice, culminating with group games and a reader’s theater play.

Literacy Ladders is a program that uses both direct small group instruction and targeted individual activities in environment of choice to show kids how fun reading can really be! The days are lively, engaging with multi-sensory activities that provide an atmosphere of fun and informative learning.

Here are a few facts about reading to keep in mind:

  • Ultimate purpose of reading is to make meaning from text.
  • Letter sound correspondence and decoding is not sufficient to break the reading code.
  • Efficient readers utilize three cueing systems: semantic, syntactic and grapho-phonemic to support decoding.
  • A blended approach of phonics and whole word coordinates the three cueing systems.
  • Multiple strategies need be engaged to read fluently, comprehend and truly understand the author’s meaning.

Toni’s literacy camp was a great introduction for our son to Parkside and elementary school in general. She taught a wide range of basic literacy skills and it was intense and challenging! She also kept it fun and engaging by incorporating activities like ice painting and water balloon races. We highly recommend Miss Toni!” ~ Rosie Bamberger Chavez, parent of Tomas, 2nd grader Parkside Community School
